How Counselling Works
I believe that we can all gain in some way from counselling. There may be a specific issue you want to deal with or something more general. Just like going to the dentist, regular check ups on our mental and emotional health can be very beneficial.
A Therapeutic Relationship
I offer Humanistic Counselling. This optimistic approach integrates theories from Person-Centred counselling, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis and places great emphasis on a positive therapeutic relationship between the client and counsellor. It involves non-judgmental and empathic talking and listening as well as being respectful of difference and diversity.
Holistic Counselling
Humanistic counselling is holistic. It considers thoughts and emotions but also draws attention to other ways of knowing. For example, I might be curious about how your emotions are reflected physically in your body or intuitively in your ‘gut’ feeling.
Raising self-awareness
Individuals can be shaped by their childhood or other life experiences as well as family and other relationships. Humanistic counselling supports the view that all of us have the potential to develop and make our own choices based on increased self-awareness. I work with clients to explore their current reality as well as their past experience in a way that increases self-understanding and self-acceptance.
‘The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.’
